One of a kind jewelry made by a Caddisly

Necklace and earring set with seashell cases. One of a kind jewelry made by Macroinvertebrate (specifically caddisflies). This necklace and earring set is built from woven cocoons using precious metals and gemstones.

Kathy Kyle Stout, president of Wildscape Inc. since 1995, is still creating unique jewelry using the cases of caddisflies.to educate people about the importance of our streams and also to show off the beauty of Nature.

Caddisflies are found throughout our watershed. Look in the headwaters and for streams with ripples.

VITAL TO THE ECOSYSTEM

These caddisflies have a one-year life cycle. They hatch from egg masses in the fall and begin to build protective cases by cutting out circles in leaves and gluing them together with silk that they produce.

In the spring, with a case about 1" in length, the caddisfly is ready to transition into its stone case. The caddisfly will then start adding stones to its leaf case

TINY ARTISANS AT WORK

The caddisfly is the only aquatic insect that builds its own protective case out of the substrate that is in their environment.

Caddisfly larvae are placed into an environment containing such materials as gold flakes, precious gems, and pearls, and left to make cases out of these materials.

As the stones are added to the leaf case, the caddisfly larva moves into its stone case and leaves the leaf case to be used as food for itself or for other caddisflies.

It takes its time because this is the final case and also the cacoon that the caddisfly larva will use when it is ready to go into metamorphosis and change into the adult form of the caddisfly.

After undergoing a miraculous metamorphosis they emerge as a beautiful adult and a tasty treat for trout.
