About the artist:

Dorothy Powers was born in Hartford, Connecticut and attended Weaver High School. After graduation, she studied painting and drawing at the Hartford Art School, now the University of Hartford. During that time she studied illustration at the Art School of Fashion in West Hartford.

Dorothy gained recognition in the New Haven arts community in the 1980's and began showing in group and individual exhibits including the Brooklyn Museum, 22 Wooster Gallery, Artspace, the John Slade Ely House, and the Creative Arts Workshop. Dorothy's works are in the permanent collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art, Smilow Cancer Hospital, Sacred Heart University, and the Housatonic Museum and in many personal collections. She was the recipient of the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2006 for her provocative collection depicting women in burkas struggling against the wind. Never one to shy away from her strong beliefs, much of her art centered on political and sociological pathologies including gun violence, women's rights, and global warming. Her love of teaching brought her tremendous joy. She was on staff at the Creative Arts Workshop for many years, was an adjunct instructor at two local universities and had a special love for art therapy programs.
