Phil Lyons operates "Clay West" at Madison West High School where he teaches Ceramics & Sculpture. He received his B.F.A. from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and his M.F.A. from the U.W. Madison. Phil spent three years of his youth in the Middle East (Baghdad & Teheran) but grew up primarily in Madison, Wisconsin where studied with Don Hunt at West High. He also spent one summer at "South Bear" School in Iowa learning the Bauhaus way with Dean Schwarz, and collaborating with his brother Beauvais - art professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After one year at U.W. Madison (Don Reitz, Bruce Breckenridge) he transferred to NYSCC at Alfred University (NY) where he worked with Wayne Higby, Tony Hepburn and Val Cushing. While at Alfred, Phil's video and ceramic work was shown throughout N.Y. including the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo where he was awarded the Buffalo Courier Express Award at the 39th Western N.Y. State Art Exhibit. Phil also played lacrosse for Alfred U. and has coached multiple state championship teams in both lacrosse and swimming & diving. Phil also helps to coordinate the Habitat for Humanity "Souperbowl" fundraiser, and along with his students, sells his pottery at Madison's Art Fair Off the Square. His current work includes a series of large ceramic spheres, figurative/architectural pieces, and wheel thrown functional ware. Phil's large head sculptures were recently featured in the show "All Fired Up - Contemporary Ceramics in Wisconsin" at the Wisconsin Museum of Art in West Bend. Lyons is also a professional musician who performs throughout the Midwest with his bands, Steely Dane, Primitive Culture, VO5, Emmettville and The WhoDat. He lives with his wife Judy in the Madison, Wisconsin area, and has three grown sons who are professional musicians and artists . Phil can be reached at [email protected].
