Asarum caudatum (GROUP OF 3) / Size: 5" pot

This wild ginger is native to moist, mixed conifer forests throughout the Pacific Northwest, and makes an excellent, thick evergreen understory groundcover where conditions are suitable. Foliage is heart-shaped, bold, and bright green with hairy, triangular, cup-shaped flowers of reddish-brown to brownish-purple blooming at soil level, often hidden by the foliage. It is a rhizomatous and spreads to form an attractive mat over time. Leaves and roots smell of ginger, though are unrelated to culinary ginger. Grows to 6" tall, blooms from April to June, prefers part shade to full shade with a loose organic soil. Regular and even moisture levels are preferred, though the species does have some drought tolerance but less tolerant of excessive heat and humidity. Hardy to Zone 7.
