Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation' / Size: 4-5' tall, B&B root ball

'Sensation' is a mid-season bloomer, typically around the beginning of May at NYBG. This cultivated lilac variety has single flowers with extremely unique pruple and white bicolor florets. The bicolor effect is created by white margin markings that originated as a mutation found on the purple cultivar 'Hugo de Vres'. This unusal variety was introduced in 1938 by Dutch nurseryman Dirk Eveleens Maarse Sr., and has continued to be an extremely popular variety ever since. One could even say it caused a bit of a sensation! Hardy to Zone 4, this lilac prefers well-drained soils and a sunny garden location. This beloved lilac's name celebrates its status as the first bicolor lilac ever selected.
