Prunus mume 'Kobai' / Size: 4" trunk diameter, B&B root ball

Surprisingly uncommon in American gardens, Prunus mume are a true harbinger of spring, often bursting into full bloom in late February or early March. A profuse flowerer, 'Kobai' offers a pop of color with its unusually reddish-pink and semi-double flowers that smell faintly of cinnamon. Hardy to Zone 6, this small tree grows around 15-20' high and wide. 'Kobai' flowers best in full sun but can tolerate a little shade. Japanese apricots prefer well-drained soils. Prunus mume will produce edible but sour fruit, rarely eaten in the West but enjoyed in the East, where flowers are used to make tea in Korea, and in China fruit is used to make a popular culinary condiment, a thick, sweet plum sauce or turned into a pickled treat. In Japan, Prunus mume fruit is used to make a wine called umeshu.

Tree delivery fees ranges from $350 - 600. See map. Please select your zone at checkout under "Large Plant Delivery." Your entire order is included in this fee.
