We Are Family is a collaborative painting, lovingly created by kids living at Interval House for a recent exhibition at the Mandell Jewish Community Center, "Under One Roof: Welcoming the Stranger." This work is a powerful illustration of the promise and healing that takes place in the Safe House in the aftermath of childhood interrupted and family fractured, all through the eyes of a child.
Several kids ages 4-13 worked on this painting over the summer of 2019. Shannon Marone, an art therapist working with Interval House, guided the children through exercises to visualize words and images that represented their feelings about living under one roof with strangers. Shannon says:
All of our artists agreed there needed to be a house big enough for everyone-a place for everyone to feel safe, welcomed, and included-surrounded by trees, flowers, and a sunny sky. They also wanted to include a barn to depict a sanctuary, similar to their current residence, only with animals! It was decided the phrase "We Are Family" should be included on top of the house, along with words that describe what it's like to live with strangers-nature, unity, love, peace, family.
