Holiday Baskets Program

Holiday Baskets is our cornerstone program, which began in 1931 during the inception of Sandpipers itself. Each December, Sandpipers distributes over 100 baskets filled to the brim with household necessities, personal care items, clothing, and toys to families in financial need. These families are suffering true economic hardships and many have experienced recent traumas. When a basket is delivered, the family is actually receiving a carload full of necessities and gifts, and more than anything, a gift of the heart.

Participating families are referred to us by our partner agencies. The social workers recommend those who are in the greatest need. Sandpipers also receive many donations of goods and financial support through individuals and local and corporate businesses. During Holiday Baskets' distribution day at the Kiwanis Center in Hermosa Beach, community partners such as the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club, Manhattan Beach Amigos, Mira Costa High Interact Club, and Sandpiper Juniors come out and help the volunteers "adopting" a family to choose gifts and load their cars.
