The project to collect and publish the Papers of Thomas Jefferson began in 1943 at Princeton University and is still going today, with volume 42 being their most recent work published in 2014. In 1998 Princeton University partnered with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to compile and compose the Retirement Series, which contains all his written works between the end of his presidency and his death in 1826.

The collection contains 47 volumes of his writings. Volumes 1-35, 37-38, 40-41 from the Papers of Thomas Jefferson series, and volumes 1-2, 4, 6, 8-11 from the Retirement Series.
