44The facility that we now know as the Ada Jenkins Center has a proud history.
30 years - Served, first as the Davidson Colored School and then as the Ada Jenkins Elementary School, as the only school for African Americans in Davidson. As such, it was the center of Davidson's Westside community.
It then housed one of Mecklenburg County's first kindergartens, an integrated program which served hundreds of Davidson's five year olds.
Early 1970's - kindergarten moved to Davidson Elementary school
Ada Jenkins Center building was used as a recreation center which also offered some social services programs.
1991 - The Ada Jenkins Families and Careers Development Center was founded
1998 - Fueled by hundreds of volunteers in the community it became the Ada Jenkins Center as we know it today. A vital lifeline for citizens across northern Mecklenburg County.
The author, Nancy Snell Griffith, a resident of Davidson, researched and committed her findings to "paper". She was helped along the way by many people within the community that shared stories and photographs. A true historical perspective comes from many sources and experiences.
