Lower Elementary II created an epic-sized quilt to show the phases of the moon through cyanotype. This queen-size quilt was made primarily by the children; they cut all the fabric squares and learned how to use a sewing machine to stitch the squares together. The phases of the moon were created using a photographic process called cyanotype. Each child drew and cut out one phase of the moon cycle and placed it on top of the chemically treated fabric. They then placed their squares under a black light to expose the design. Once the quilt top was completed, the children learned about the process of quilting and helped put everything together. The quilt measures approximately 90" x 108" and is 100% cotton.
