Enjoy 4 Hours of training with the Air Support Unit (a.k.a. ASU), learning about their training methods and equipment use, along with the day-to-day operations of the Fort Wayne Police Department's Air Support Unit.
The Air Support Unit is equipped to respond to multiple situations: active shooter; barricade; terrorist attack; natural disaster or other disaster response; geographical, environmental or other survey purposes unrelated to criminal justice purposes, and aerial photographs or video of a motor vehicle accident site on a public street or public highway. The Unit members are federally certified to fly the department's unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and are on-call 24/7. The officers typically work in a team of two: one officer will be the visual observer, who will assist with pre-flight, launch and landing procedures, as well as maintain situational awareness and communications with other on-scene law enforcement personnel, and the remote pilot in command will be piloting the ASU.
