"Shoe Pop Art"

The 5th Graders started an art unit on Pop Art by looking at the work of Andy Warhol. The idea of simplicity and mass production defined much of his work and artistic philosophy. The students created contour line drawing and blotted ink prints of shoes. We continued the theme of shoes as we explored linocut. The students looked at examples of woodcut and linocut for inspiration as they created a printing plate. First, the students set up their composition on the printing plate and then they carved into the block to remove the area around their shoe and to add details to their shoe. We learned about the print making process and the tools used for printmaking. The students used their printing plates to create their own prints as well as this stunning and colorful group print.
