In the fall of 2017, Kent State University at Ashtabula's Wine Degrees programs entered into a unique blended learning experience and partnership with the award-winning Laurello Vineyards. Students and faculty in the Kent State Ashtabula Viticulture and Enology classes now assist with the production and bottling of the "Kent State Ashtabula Wines" labeled wine as part of their hands-on training program, actively learning in the vineyards and cellar at Laurello's Harpersfield Township winery.
Kent State Ashtabula offers the only wine degree programs in the state of Ohio, providing students the opportunity to earn degrees in viticulture, grape growing, and enology, wine making. The hybrid study program combines online courses with in-person experience in state-of-the-art laboratories, vineyards and wineries, and attracts students from across the country.
"Our program is what the wine industry needs due to the rapid growth in the past 10 years," said Ed Trebets, an award-winning winemaker who serves as the lead faculty for the programs. "Our industry will need skilled workers in the winery and the vineyard as it continues to grow and more entrepreneurs want to join the industry."

About the Wines?
Sunset
Sunset Red is a vinifera blend made up of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc Grand River Valley grapes. It has aromas of black pepper and dark fruit with subtle oak flavors and a smooth lingering finish. Sunset pairs well with steak, a good burger, lamb, beef short ribs, mushrooms, with cheddar or Gouda cheese and a Flashes' victory.
Sunburst
Sunburst is a dry Riesling from fruit grown in the Grand River Valley. It has aromas and flavors of stone fruit and green apple and has a long lingering finish backed up with good acidity. Sunburst pairs with salmon, tuna, shrimp, chicken, Asian foods, and blue cheese, feta and Parmesan alongside MAC Championships.
17°
Seventeen degrees is the temperature at which naturally frozen Vidal grapes are harvested, producing a concentrated, dessert wine. Picked from the vine in the Grand River Valley appellation, this ice wine has aromas of dried fruit and flavors of honey and sweet apricot. As a dessert wine, 17° goes best with Brie, Stilton, cheesecake and ice cream during the post-game celebration!
