Fannie Lager, Modernist Wood Sculpture, c. 1950-1960. 19"H x 14"W x 5.75"D.

In the hands of Lager, an American Postwar sculptor, nature becomes biomorphic art. This stunning example of her work displays her affinity for contemporary shapes and forms. Meticulously rendered in wood, this amorphous sculpture is one of her finest and would be perfect in a mid-century decor or eclectic interior. The wood in Lager's sculpture comes from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. She befriended the groundskeepers, winning them over so they would contact her when exotic trees or branches would fall during a storm. She would choose the best pieces which were handed over a back fence and spirited away in a taxi cab.
