0We will donate 10 canna rhizomes in time for spring planting.
Cannas are large showy tropical flowers. . Rhizomes are like bulbs except they grow laterally instead of down. The version I have may grow 5 feet or higher with tall spikes topped with bright scarlet flowers. The spikes grow out of broad green sword-like leaves. They prefer lots of sun and moisture.
The optimal time for planting cannas is from late April to end of May. If you dead head them they will bloom until frost. They also work very well in large planters. Multiple spikes may grow from one rhizome if they have space. And they multiply. Dig them up you'll have more next year. Plant only an inch or so deep, they are easy to put in and take out.
Like many of us they will not survive a Chicago winter outdoors. To use them next year, take them out after the first frost and store in a dark, cool, dry place till next spring. Planting is on your own but I'll give you lots of free advice and moral support even check your lot for a good location.
