This three piece set was created by the children at Providence Speech and Hearing Center to practice/explore tactile and bi-manual activities in order to develop grasp and strength through play. In order to get dressed, groom ourselves, write, etc., we need to develop control at our finger tips and we need to use both of our hands to work together.

  1. The goal of the red piece was to encourage tactile play at the child's comfort level and slowly increase exploration (some children enjoy rubbing their hands and fingers in paint while others become defensive and need a tool to interact, like a brush or cork). The cracks were a happy accident when the piece was moved, so the children where asked to push on the dry paint to make more cracks.
  2. The yellow piece was used to practice bi-manual activities doing the same action with both hands. On one half of the canvas, children squished and rolled the paper then pasted it on wet glue/paint. The other yellow side was made by heavily died glue. The children were allowed to use a squeeze bottle (some chose to squeeze on the same spot over and over again) the goal being again to use both hands together. This time the children were also working on strength and endurance.
  3. The blue piece was used to teach tactile exposure with a different tool (bubble wrap or cloth wool to paint) and bi-manual coordination this time having your hands do different motion/tasks to complete the activity (one hand would stabilize, the other would be actively moving).
