"The Big Easy" by Henri A. Rathle, M.D.

Dr. Henri Rathle was a well known physician and artist in Mobile. He was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1911. Dr. Rathle earned his medical degree at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. While studying in Paris, he acquired his love for art and painting. After his studies, he served in the medical unit of the British Army in World War II. He then moved to the United States in 1949 to practice medicine and continue his passion for art in New York, St. Louis, New Orleans and then in Mobile where his family now resides. He was an allergist and a pioneer in acupuncture in the state of Alabama. Dr. Rathle died on March 21, 2007 but his life lives on through his art. He is well known for his seascapes and portraits. His art has been displayed around the country and featured locally at the Mobile Museum of Art and the History Museum of Mobile.
