Yolanda González (USA, b. 1964)

Portrait of Margarita, 2010

Acrylic on canvas

40 x 40 inches

Yolanda González conveys a poetic power in her work. The use of saturated colors mixes with the subtle portraits of bohemian females wrapped in their own thoughts. She was born in a family with an artistic heritage that dates back to 1877. Her travels, her ties forged with individuals in those places and the resulting transformative experiences are reflected in her art and her life. Known for her strong and bold strokes of color and texture, with the intention of evoking imagination and emotion.

In 1998, she was a resident artist in Ginza, Japan, followed by a similar season in Assisi, Italy, during 1999. Among the many museums that have shown her work are the Armand Hammer Museum, The Geffen Contemporary in MOCA, the American Japanese National Museum and the Diego Rivera Museum in Mexico City. During the years Gonzalez has taught at Inner City Arts, For Children, Plaza de La Raza, Crenshaw Christian Center, MOCA and Alta Med.
