Enjoy this beautiful, handmade vase created by local artist and teacher, Lois Hirshberg! Western Raku pottery is beautifully unpredictable and unique due to the unusual firing and cooling processes that ensure no two pieces are alike! The pottery is placed in a hot kiln and removed precisely when the glaze melts (~1800 F). The thermal shock from the significant temperature change causes the glaze to crackle. The pottery is then placed into a metal can with combustible materials such as wood chips and paper. This material ignites, and the ensuing "smoking" of the pottery determines the final colors and shadings of the piece.
