Mission Project #7

Water & Sanitation Systems for Youth Center

Kakamega, Kenya

The Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga work with impoverished youth, many of whom are street children and orphans. To help build job skills and self-reliance in these young people, the Brothers provide housing, rehabilitation and education at a center they operate in the town of Kakamega. Currently, there are (80) boys and (50) girls housed at the center. There are many needs, such as building a girls' dormitory, buying a school van and updating the vocational curriculum. But the most dire need is for clean, drinkable water and decent sanitation. Due to drought conditions and population increase, the town's inadequate water system cannot supply enough water for the youth center. So the children must walk a long distance to fill containers at the town well, which takes away from their schooling and sometimes leads to mischief.

The Center hopes to replace primitive, manual water collection with a water system that captures and stores enough of its own rainwater to meet all its drinking, cooking and sanitation needs. A donation of $5,000 to this most worthwhile cause will produce great benefits in the lives of these forgotten children, and you will be blessed.
