Kari Stieglitz Black, Landscape Platter, Stoneware, 16"x 2-½"
Kari Stieglitz Black is an adjunct professor of ceramics at Bethel University and a ceramics instructor at the South Bend Museum of Art where she is a member of the Board of Directors. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Snite Museum at the University of Notre Dame and she is President of the Northern Indiana Artists. Kari's ceramic art is concerned with the sculptural qualities of both functional and aesthetic pieces; whether wheel thrown, hand built, or a combination of the two. Her glazes have painterly qualities that reflect her interest and practice in oil, acrylic, and pastel painting. She has exhibited throughout the area in juried competitions including the Midwest Museum of Art Juried Regional, Michiana Annual Art Competition, the Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition, and Indiana Artists Club.
Artist statement excerpt:
I make things with paint and clay. I have also recently begun making large graphite drawings of still lifes.Though the three seem very disparate, they all share a common germ. When I look for the common threads that unite them, these are those that are obvious to me.
Whether paint, pastel or glaze, I am attracted to the emotional power of color. In the same way clay can be pushed into form, I tend to push paint in a way that literally defines forms with its physical state as well as the illusion of form that results from perspective and the value (lightness or darkness) of color.
