Artist statement about Growing a Hole:
Growing a Hole is graphite on paper and cut paper inlay, and comes from my ongoing Studiolo project (inspired by the Gubbio Studiolo (ca.1478-1482), a room on permanent exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. All of my drawings in this project include exchanged parts with other drawings. Years later I can still sometimes recognize where some of the parts originated from. In this one, the hook-like shapes come from Untitled (Grecian) (2011-2014). I also see some blobby bits that are from a drawing that's been in process since 2011 and is still hanging on my studio wall. Most of the movement in this drawing is internal, however, and you can see elements that have moved from one area to another as the central spiral took shape.
