This limited-edition poster, gifted by The Maurice Sendak Foundation, was included in the Rosenbach Museum and Library's exhibition Maurice Sendak: The Artist's Collection of Children's Toys, Books, and Drawings (1981). The image originally appeared on the cover of TV Guide in 1978 to celebrate the shared 50th birthdays of Maurice Sendak and Mickey Mouse. In the magazine, Sendak shared his childhood memories of seeing Mickey on television, his collection of Mickey Mouse memorabilia, and his dream of working for Disney. About their shared birthday celebration, Sendak said, "I am six months older than [Mickey] is, but he looks a good deal younger than I do!"

Sendak illustrated more than 100 books during his prolific 60-year career. His many awards include the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are (1963), the 1970 Hans Christian Anderson Award for lifetime achievement, and the first ever Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2003. Sendak was the 2008 Carle Honors Artist. A retrospective of his work was featured in The Carle's inaugural exhibition Maurice Sendak: Inside and Out (2002).



All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
