This illustration provides a sneak peek into Grace Lin's forthcoming book A Big Bed for Little Snow (2019), a companion to her Caldecott Honor Book A Big Mooncake for Little Star (2018). In both stories, Lin employs a "fade-away style," in which the background blends into the figures and only the patterns of their clothes give dimension to their forms.
Lin won a Newbery Honor for Where The Mountain Meets The Moon (2009). She was recently elected to The Carle's Board of Trustees, and is co-host of this year's Carle Honors with her childhood friend, esteemed book editor Alvina Ling. Lin and Jarrett J. Krosoczka organized The Carle's exhibition Now and Then: Contemporary Illustrators and their Childhood Art, opening December 14, 2019.
All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
Artwork is framed by R. Michelson Galleries using archival materials.
Winners can take their artwork immediately after The Carle Honors. Absentee winners will receive their artwork via Federal Express; a flat shipping fee of $150 per artwork will apply.
