Carson Ellis illustrated The Shortest Day (2019), a picture-book adaptation of Susan Cooper's winter solstice poem of the same name. This study shows the sun growing weary with the onset of autumn. About the work, Ellis says: "I [had] tried a lot of approaches---the atmospheric landscapes of this book were hard for me. This is my favorite study because I finally, finally felt---with this one---like I'd figured it out."

Ellis won a Caldecott Honor and the E. B. White Read Aloud Award for her book Du Iz Tak? (2016). Other awards include two silver medals from the Society of Illustrators and a Grammy nomination in 2016 for her design for The Decemberists' LP, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World.



All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
