Catia Chien's mysterious image is the first in a series of five that illustrates two children exploring an alternate universe. She used aquatint, an ancient printmaking technique, to create the tonal, watercolor-like effects.
The Society of Illustrators awarded Chien a gold medal for her first book The Sea Serpent and Me (2008). Her book A Boy and a Jaguar (2014), written by Alan Robinowitz, won the 2015 Schneider Family Book Award. Art from Chien's forthcoming book with poet Michael Belcher, This Tenderness in the Attending, was featured in The Carle's recent exhibition Out of the Box: The Graphic Novel Comes of Age (2019).
All proceeds benefit The Carle's mission to instill a love of art and reading through picture books.
Artwork is framed by R. Michelson Galleries using archival materials.
Winners can take their artwork immediately after The Carle Honors. Absentee winners will receive their artwork via Federal Express; a flat shipping fee of $150 per artwork will apply.
