Traditional Art Style: Kabazaiku (Cherry Bark Crafts and Woodworking)

History:

Kabazaiku was brought to Akita several years (1775-1783) by Hikoroku Fujimura, an officer of Lord Satake. This now prized art was first developed as a side job for the lower-level soldiers. After the loss of their stipend during the Meiji Era, cherry bark crafts became their livelihood. With an emerging market system, their products were displayed and sold over an ever-widening area. The love for these pieces has transcended Japan's economic history and has made these crafts highly sought after to this day.

Special Features:

Using a special technique, the artisan enhances the luster and deep, rich color that is unique to "mountain cherry bark." It is these qualities that have made Kazazaiku so popular and admired.
