Ichimatsu dolls represent little girls or boys and were originally named after an 18th-century adult Kabuki actor. The Friendship Doll Exchange of 1927 involved the creation of 58, 32-inch dolls representing little girls, to be sent as a gift from Japan to the United States; and the aesthetic of these dolls became so popular that it influenced doll makers to recreate this type of a solemn and gentle little girl in elaborate kimono for the following decades.
