About the Piece

As long as I can remember, I have always loved plants. I grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, where collecting and preserving plants was a family activity. My education at the Cranbrook Schools enriched my appreciation and love of nature and developed my awareness that science and art are closely related. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in biology and a passion for the scientific beauty of the natural world. I grow most of the flowers that I photograph, and I carefully observe with awe the amazing and varied life cycles of each unique plant. Pink Calla III is one of a series of photographs that I created to portray the beautiful curvature of the calla lily's dominant structure, the calyx. Within the calyx grows the inflorescence that is composed of hundreds of tiny yellow florets that become laden with pollen as the flower matures.

About the Artist

Amy Lamb combines science and art in her imagery. With a Ph.D. in biology from University of Michigan, research experience at the Basel Institute of Immunology and National Institutes of Health, and a rich formal background in art, photography, and graphic design, Amy creates photographs that reveal the structural beauty of flora with a scientist's eye for detail and functional significance. Her large-format prints celebrate the grandeur of plants and can be found in private and public collections and museums in the United States and abroad. She exhibits her work and lectures in both science and art venues, such as the National Science Foundation, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Amy's work, both in science and in art, has been in published in juried scientific journals, on book covers, and in feature articles in news media and magazines.
