"Susquehanna View 1"
Mixed Media (oil paints, cold wax, charcoal), Signed
10" x 10"

About the Piece
Landscape painting, especially plein air/outdoor work, informs the work of art at hand, as well as the painter's visual memory. What often engages me most are the layers of landscape that bring depth and complexity to a landscape painting. Some of my current work engages the suggestion of a landscape and its layers in a more abstract way, with a mix of media: oil paints, cold wax, graphite, and charcoal. Layers build on layers to suggest depth, with hints of what is underneath. Initial lines drawn may peak through the layers of paint and wax. The process can require waiting for one layer to dry before you can apply the next.

About the Artist
Landscape architect Jeff Charlesworth engages the art of landscape painting in the countryside and small towns of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His plein air (outdoor) artwork in oils captures the color and light of these landscapes in all four seasons. His on-site drawings and watercolors fill his sketchbooks. He is a partner in his own practice, Charlesworth Fleischacker Landscape Architects, whose work in residential, institutional, and commercial landscapes has received state and regional awards for landscape architecture, planting, and environmental design. His recently designed and installed gardens are found throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as on Nantucket, in North Carolina, and Rome, Italy. Charlesworth teaches landscape studios, graphics, and planting at Delaware Valley University. He has taught drawing workshops at the Barnes Arboretum, American University, and at the School of Environmental Sciences and Forestry at Syracuse University. His artwork frequently appears in juried shows and galleries in New Jersey and in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
