About the Piece

Tom Lamb is an abstract-expressionist artist utilizing aerial photography to create images of those anomalies and pieces of the landscape he calls "Lambscapes."

About the Artist

"Looking toward earth, directing the pilot to spin around, dip the nose, fly sideways or backwards, and even cut the engines to float downward-all to capture the right image. With a helicopter and its pilot, it's like doing a dance-creating the abstract work is my dream state." -Tom Lamb

Tom Lamb is a landscape and ethnographic photographer. He uses photography as his primary tool, along with pioneering trends in new media. Through the art of storytelling, Lamb has dedicated his life to creating memorable photographs and championing environmental awareness. His images, both from the air and the ground, are often of in-transition or abandoned landscapes. He uses images to examine how we interact with the planet's most valuable and increasingly threatened resources. Lamb is interested in the abstract balance between the natural world and man's mark on the land. Lamb's introduction to the art movement known as Abstract Expressionism came while he was a graduate student at the Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1970s. During that time Lamb assisted Aaron Siskind, who was well known for his own abstract photographic work. Lamb's work is published, exhibited, and collected internationally. He runs Lamb Studio, a design, communications, and photography workshop focused on architecture, landscape, environmental, and cultural interpretation efforts. The studio has collaborated with non-profits aiding in efforts worldwide. Photography alters perspective; it brings small or distant subjects into view and expands the frame of natural vision. It is the relationship between Lamb's photographs and abstract painting that is perhaps the most direct association for the viewer and one that he especially emphasizes in his aerial compositions. Soaring above ground, leaning out of the open side of the helicopter.
