Bear Warrior Society shield and ceremonial lance
This design shows the bear at the entrance of a cave protecting his family from the attack of its enemy. In the middle of his shield, a warrior placed his personal medicine bundle. This one contains buffalo hair, sage, sweetgrass and a buffalo tooth. A piece of deer antler and a glass trade bead hang from the bundle. The trade cloth and imitation eagle feathers representing coups, or battle honors, were arranged to permit the warrior to fire his bow effectively without losing the shield's protective power. This shield is based on a Kiowa design.
Dimensions:
Length 36 | Width 21 inches
Length measured from the top of shield to bottom of the trade cloth.
By placing the bear image on his shield, it was believed the warrior would receive the bear's attributes in battle. The Bear Lance has a bear claw cut out of the hand-forged point and is trimmed with red trade cloth, imitation eagle feathers, horse hair, rooster tail feathers and leather fringes and wraps.
Dimensions:
Length 68 | Width 15 inches
Length 172.8 | Width 38.1 cm
