This bowl was turned from a huge Mango tree harvested in Haiku, Maui. The fine lines of color on the outside of the bowl are called "Spalting."

This is a form of fermentation of the natural sugars inside the fruit tree. The bowl was turned while still green and uncured. The bowl and its wet shavings were buried in a plastic bag for 5-6 months in the dark. This allowed Mother Nature to take over and paint the bowl naturally.

The shape of the bowl is reminiscent of Anisazi pottery seen in New Mexico; that theme is continued with a classic Native American design in the inlay. The inlay is done with real Turquoise from Jerome, New Mexico. The relief pattern is carefully cut with a dental drill, filled with Turquoise and sealed with epoxy - 1 drip at a time. It was then sanded and finished with marine grade epoxy and automotive urethane. This makes for a unique, one of a kind art piece.

An O'Reilly original.
