Fishers Island Weekend

Spend the 2020 Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 9-12, 2020) in the private Preston-Reed Cottage on exclusive Fishers Island, New York. This six-bedroom, three full-bathroom home overlooks a private cove and the 18th hole of the Fishers Island Club.

Surrounded by natural beauty, Fishers Island is a nine-mile-long islet wedged between Connecticut's shore and the North Fork of Long Island. Its history as an exclusive summer sanctuary dates back a century to when it housed properties owned by names such as du Pont, Whitney, Roosevelt and Luce.

During the weekend, play two rounds of golf at the Fishers Island Club, ranked the 10th best golf course in the country. From the simple and effective Cape Cod-style clubhouse, to the subtle elegance of the water, this place oozes with traditional values of the game. Designed by Seth Raynor and opened in 1926, the lines of the fairway horizons contrast beautifully with the ocean lines in the background. On some holes, the cavernous bunkers and steep slopes down to the beach provide a depth that contrasts with the elevated greens and flat approaches. The use of native grasses to separate the golf course from the cottages blends in beautifully with the surroundings, and some of the archaic trees that adorn the property put out a soothing white noise with the leaves rustling in the ocean breeze. The ocean enters the course and is a fantastic internal design feature on many holes, most notably the 18th.

The fishing in and around Fishers is some of the best and most challenging on the East Coast. Some of the prettiest beaches on the Long Island Sound grace Fishers Island's coastline. Large amounts of land are in a nature preserve trust. Enjoy walking trails that loop through prairie grasses, woodlands, wetlands and ocean settings that are havens to birds, animals and rare flora. Let the kids ride their bikes down to the playground or the store. Just be back home in time for dinner.

Meals are provided. Alcoholic beverages are not included. As transportation can be difficult, a car is recommended. Regular passenger and auto ferry service connects the Island with New London, Connecticut (45-minute boat ride). Kayaks and bikes included.
