MO'OKANAKA A MAU

From the genealogy of Haloa comes forth all Hawaiians forever.

To Hawaiians, kalo was not only a source of food, it was also what bonded them to their culture and their beliefs about the creation of man. According to the Kumulipo, the creation chant, the union of Wakea (sky father) and Papa (earth mother) created the Hawaiian islands. Together they had a daughter, Ho'ohokulani. Through Wakea's relationship with his daughter, Ho'ohokulani, they had a son who they named Haloa-naka but he was stillborn and so his body was buried. Out of his body sprouted the first kalo plant. They then had another son together, healthy and strong, who they also named Haloa. The younger Haloa would respect and care for his elder brother and in return, his older brother would provide him sustenance and nourishment, and so the kalo grew abundantly. This younger son became the first human to live in the islands, and from him, all Hawaiian people are descended. Limited edition signed by the artist Nelson Makua of Hilo, HI and custom framed by Tom Itomo, Artrageous Fine Framing. Measures 14" x 37.5".
