PELE'S JOURNEY TO HAWAI'I

'O ka hele a ka Wahini u'l, meha ka leo i kula

Seeking a new home, Pele left her home in Tahiti and sailed her canoe northward. She was guided by her elder brother Kamohoali'i who took the form of a great shark. With her she took her little sister Hi'iaka, in the form of an egg which she carried under her armpit. After a long journey her canoe made landfall in the northern most islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. Pele needed to dig a deep pit to keep the sacred fires safe. Using her O'o, digging stick, she began to dig her fire pit but Pele had been followed from Tahiti by her angry sister, MamakaoKaha'i, goddess of the sea. Each attempt to dig a new home was flooded out by her sister. Pele traveled down the island chain until she found her final home at Kilauea on the island of Hawaii'i. Here, high above the sea on the slopes of Mauna Loa her fires would be safe and could burn eternally. Pele had found her new home.
