19th Century Chinese Buddhist Lion, "foo dog", exquisitely carved entirely from one piece of hardwood, and covered in a dark patina. This male has an openly carved body which contains a smaller internally carved ball within. The ball is believed to represent the union of Heaven and Earth. There is a similar internally carved ball within the lion's mouth. Statues of guardian lions have stood in front of Chinese palaces, tombs, temples and homes of the wealthy since the Han Dynasty and are believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.
