Miao or Hmong Tribal Jewelry comes from a group of Asiatic people who migrated away from their homelands in what is now the Southwestern Provinces of China. Nearly every Miao person has something silver on, mostly silver bracelets or big shiny bangles. It has been a part of their culture for over 400 years. Miao silver is not pure silver, but an alloy of silver, white copper and nickel. The percentage of silver is about 60%. Due to the lack of silver resources in the area, Miao people would melt almost all the silver coins and ingots they earned to create jewelry. This was the main reason for the different purity of silver as currency was different from region to region.
