*Made using the Canton Enamel method, these vases are made of copper and then covered in enamel. Production originated in Canton, hence the name "Canton Enamel". Painted enamel techniques were originally developed in Limoges, France in about 1470 and then introduced into China in the 18th century, probably by French missionaries. A metal object, usually copper but sometimes silver or gold, was covered with a background layer of enamel (often white), fired in a kiln, and then is painted with colored enamels. The finished piece was then re-fired resulting in the vibrant colors you see here.
