Photograph by Rick Graves of a girl jumping & Cherry blossom trees.

Rick Graves is recognized industry-wide as an authority in capturing the essence of high-energy action imagery. His innovative quest to capture images of speed led him to develop a novel camera system dubbed, DistaCam. His self-built apparatus exposes an entire roll of film as one single frame, intriguingly capturing a "period of time" versus a "fraction of a second." His slit-scan process creates images in motion so extraordinary that Wired Magazine, Autoweek, American Photo, Chinese Art Photography have written articles featuring his distinctive work.

Graves work is specifically mentioned in The Art of Strip Photography, a book and masters thesis devoted to the history and evolution of the slit scan photographic technique.

2019 will mark Graves 12th year exhibiting at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, CA. His work has been shown at the Capitola Art and Wine Festival, Bistango Restaurant in Irvine, Wells Fargo Bank in Laguna Beach and the Marine Institute in Dana Point, CA.

In 2016 and 2017 Graves was chosen as one of eleven Patron's Pick for the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, CA. His work was featured in the annual Patron's Picks fine art exhibit at Wells Fargo Bank in Laguna Beach, CA.

Graves is a graduate ('81-'84) of the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a BFA in photography. Graves attended Orange Coast College after graduating high school in 1978.

He has two lovely daughters. Cassidy Dawn Graves, a graduate of New York University, Tisch as a theatre major and Camryn Summer Graves, a Junior at Hofstra University, Long Island, New York, also majoring in theatre. Rick currently lives in Laguna Beach and works out of his studio in Santa Ana, California creating films and fine art for his clients. In his spare time Graves enjoys playing tennis at the courts adjacent to the Festival of Arts.
