Alyson Shotz: Rheology #4, 2019
Unglazed porcelain
14.5 x 9.5 x 8 inches
Derek Eller Gallery
Having been displayed in such prominent arenas as the Guggenheim atrium and Storm King sculpture park, Alyson Shotz's monumental sculptures use materials that range from mirrors, glass, and beads, to steel, wire, and digital photography, often repeating formal elements.
Her Rheology series consists of slabs dropped from varying heights and forces onto the ground. This is a collaboration with natural forces and chance. Gravity plus the specific material properties of the porcelain, how thick the slab is, how wet or dry it is, the humidity in the air, and the force with which the slab is dropped, all collaborate to create the unique shape.
Alyson Shotz is a contemporary American artist most recently known for her Mirror Fence at Storm King and artworks at the Guggenheim Museum. As part of our 2020 Arts Initiative programming on Time, we are thrilled that Alyson will be opening a temporary installation at Grace Farms next summer, while also leading a group of multi-disciplinary artists to present a performance piece in November 2020.
Starting Bid: $10,000
