Untitled Sculpture, 2018

Ceramic with fired plant matter, 16 x 3 inches, unique edition.

Joseph Sivilli explores matter and its impermanence in the physical universe through the creation of objects of supposed permanence constructed primarily through a process of his own creation that allows him to fire plant matter that he intentionally sprouts in clay. Sivilli chooses clay for its perceived association with earth and the link that humans and other organisms have with this basest, yet most central, substance of the material experience. When he fires his objects, the sprouted plant matter is eerily and delicately frozen in time, and induces observers to encounter and accept the transience and fragility of matter and thus also consider the relatively short experience of biological life. His work has been shown at the Clayarch Gimhae Museum in South Korea, the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Art in Krakow Poland, and the Porsgrunn Porcelain Biennale in Norway.

Barnaby Furnas (b. 1973) earned his MFA in painting from Columbia University in New York and is one of the most famous contemporary painters working today. His work has been featured the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, in Austria at the Kunsthalle Wien, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Royal Academy of Arts, just to name a few.

His unorthodox use of watercolor creates a graphic flirtation between design and abstraction, seducing audiences globally. His latest paintings revolve around deconstructing myths and symbols, and he often playfully involves political or literary figures in his art. His work can be found in the collections of MoMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, MOCA Los Angeles, SFMoMA, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
