Dr. Kitagawa and Dr. Blackburn are board certified neurosurgeons who are not only compassionate doctors but are also passionate in their quest to advance brain injury research.
1. Dr. Ryan S. Kitagawa, MD
Dr. Ryan Kitagawa is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in traumatic brain injury. He is an Associate Professor for the Vivian L Smith Department of Neurosurgery for the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. He grew up in the Houston area and attended Northwestern University with degrees in Music Education and Biomedical Engineering. His medical school and neurosurgery residency were at Baylor College of Medicine, and his fellowship in neurotrauma and critical care was at the University of Miami. He is currently the Director of Neurotrauma at Memorial Hermann Hospital with research interests in traumatic brain injury and stroke.
2. Dr. Spiros Blackburn, MD
Dr. Spiros Blackburn is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery and has special expertise in endoscopic and endovascular neurosurgery. A summa cum laude graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, Dr. Blackburn received his medical degree at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After concluding his residency at Washington University in St. Louis, he completed a cerebrovascular fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta and a neuro-endovascular fellowship at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University. His clinical research interests include biomarkers for cerebral vasospasm and translational research for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as a number of clinical trials for the treatment of brain aneurysms.
