"Birth of the Sun" by Walter Hahn

5 x 3 1/2 inches
Metallic paper and Japanese sumi-e ink on paper
Signature under the mat; artist's seal visible. Framed.

"Birth of the Sun" collage is one in a collection created from metallic beer bottle labels and applied in the manner of gold leaf.

From an enfant terrible of the 1950s Chicago Art Institute scene to his subsequent 1955 Prix de Rome, Walter Hahn doggedly produced art until his death in 2017 at age 89. His early works, oils on large canvases, engaged with Western mythology in an exploration of the shadow self. His later collages and assemblages were increasingly inspired by found materials and a half century of study under East Asian calligraphy masters. He himself became a tea ceremony master. This jagged poetic work has yet to be shown.

Donated by his daughter Kimiko Hahn.
