"Deeper and deeper the dreamer of love sleeps on a quilt of stars" - The Teacher by Paul Simon
In addition to art, mandalas challenge the maker to focus and use planning as they are created with lines and symmetry. It is peaceful and meditative work that calms and clears the mind.
The children have done much work with mandalas this year creating providing the inspiration of this hand-embroidered class quilt. One student also suggested that the corners be different, so we did that as well. They selected their own designs and colors, and accomplished the work with only a little (okay, maybe quite a bit more than a little) assistance from Marie with knot untangling.
While the mandalas done by the Tashi Kyil monks, who visited VMS, are temporary and the sands are returned to the earth via a stream, these mandalas will last for years to come and will be the source of fond memories for your child.
Special thanks to Leah Swift for crafting the quilt together. She also created a handmade bag to carry the quilt or use as an overnight bag. The bag can be turned inside out and rolled into a neck pillow.
(Hand wash or treat spots with gentle hand scrub. Air dry. Or dry clean.)
