Rushern Baker IV's practice draws inspiration from the history of geometric abstraction and utilizes complex compositional juxtapositions as a mode of engaging with the viewer. His paintings mix traditional media with building materials in complex compositions that evoke landscapes that refer back to the urban and suburban environment.
Rushern Baker IV is a long time arts educator and the former Acting Director of the Brentwood Arts Exchange in Brentwood, Maryland. He has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally, including solo shows at Scaramouche Gallery and The Cooper Union in New York City, Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC, and in group shows at Hemphill Fine Art in Washington D.C., The Third Line Gallery in Dubai, The Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte, N.C., Bowie State University, MOCADA in Brooklyn NY, Koki Arts in Tokyo, and Yale University. Baker is a board member at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Md. He holds an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art. He lives in Riverdale Park, MD with his wife Annie and their cat Boone.
