To the decay that lay, Painting, 24 x 48, Abena Motaboli is a Southern African born artist currently living in Chicago. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Columbia College Chicago and atL'institut Catholique de Paris. Most of her works take on the form of installation, sound, performance, writing and painting. Using medium such as tea, coffee, plastic, ink and dirt. She makes reference to the interaction of waste and consumption in the western world. Often times her work embodies the influence of thepost apartheid era and how toxic human relations can be toward one another in political situations; the degradation of the world we live in, socially and environmentally. She is inspired by a generation of African artists who make use of found material referencing her home culture. As a result, most of her artworks try to find a comfort in being, creating spaces to contemplate, to exist, or to realize the impermanent nature of everyday situations and life.
