Each spirit's mash bill depends on each individual distiller. For example, a wheated bourbon can contain a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley or 73% corn, 15% wheat and 12% malted barley. On the other hand, a wheat whiskey can contain a mash bill of 51% wheat, 37% corn and 12% malted barley. A rye bourbon can contain a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley or 68% corn, 38.2% rye and 1.8% malted barley. Again (on the other hand), a rye whiskey can contain a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. And to really blow your mind, it's possible for an all-grain bourbon to contain 70% corn, 10% rye, 10% wheat and 10% malted barley! Point being - there are endless possibilities to a mash bill's grain ratio.
Essentially, the secret to a great whiskey is the distiller, the mash bill, factors in the process from grain to glass and lastly, the drinker. Regardless of whether you prefer a wheated or rye bourbon or a wheat or rye whiskey, we can all agree with Mark Twain when he said, "Too much of anything is bad, but too much whiskey is barely enough."
