The Making of Stinny, an Opera

Meet composer, cast, and crew on Jan. 7th over cocktails and light hors d oeuvres at a private event at First Church just for you. First Church's own Frances Pollace composed Stinney, and the opera is being produced by Prototype Festival January 13th at 3:00PM at the French Institue Alliance Frances (FIAF).

Not only will you hear from Frances you'll hear from the singers, what it's like to work on a premier. (four singers are members of the First Church Choir.) The culmination of this event is a ticket to the opera, and all winners will b provided a mastered recording that is being made after the premiere.

Stinny is set in Alcolu, South Carolina in 1944. The story is told from the perspective of two young murder victims, Mary Emma Thames (age eight) and Betty June Binnicker (age eleven). The girls guide us through the repercussions of their horrific deaths and the ensuing trial of George Stinney Jr., a fourteen-year-old black child and the youngest person to be legally executed by the United States in the 20th/21st century. George was arrested the day after the girls' bodies were found, held without council, tried by a jury of 10 white-men and executed via electric chair merely 83 days after his arrest. By investigating racial tensions in the deep south and the community's response to these murders, Stinney takes a deep look at humanity and asks the question, "What kind of fear would lead a community to sentence a child to death?"
